Recent legislation now requires Texas appraisal districts to audit homestead exemptions at least once every five years. If you haven’t already, you may receive a letter from your appraisal district asking you to verify your homestead exemption eligibility.

Here’s how it works: Many counties will audit one-fifth of properties each year over the next five years. This means you might not receive an audit request this year, but if you do, be sure to respond promptly. Failure to respond could lead to a delay in processing your exemption, incorrect calculation of your homestead cap, or even the removal of both the exemption and cap.

In Travis County, the appraisal district has set up a dedicated webpage with more information. You can also use their online portal to upload a copy of your driver’s license or state identification as part of the verification process. Visit the portal here.

Important: Your ID address must match your homestead property address, as required by Texas law. Exceptions include:

  • Residents in health or aging facilities
  • Participants in the Attorney General’s confidentiality program
  • Active military members (or spouses)
  • Holders of specific driver’s licenses under Section 521.121(c) or 521.1211 of the Transportation Code.
